injection chain
A giant collider does not accelerate particles from a standstill all by itself. It would be like asking a Formula 1 car to start from a dead stop in top gear — clumsy and inefficient. Instead, big accelerators use a relay of smaller machines, each one taking the beam from the previous stage, speeding it up, and handing it to the next. This relay is called the injection chain, and the act of passing the beam from one machine into the next is injection.
Here is roughly how it goes at a place like CERN. The particles start as a humble source — for protons, a bottle of hydrogen gas stripped of its electrons. A linac gives them their first boost. They are then injected into a small ring that accelerates them further, then a bigger ring, then a bigger one still, each adding energy and shaping the beam into properly timed bunches, until finally they are injected into the largest ring at the top. Each stage is tuned to deliver the beam at exactly the energy and structure the next stage is built to accept; a mismatch would spill the beam.
The injection chain matters because each machine in it works best over a limited range of energies, and reusing existing accelerators as injectors saves enormous cost. It also means a flagship machine inherits a lineage: the rings now feeding the LHC were themselves the frontier colliders of earlier decades, repurposed as the early stages of the chain. Understanding the chain explains a practical truth — building the headline accelerator is only part of the job; you also need everything that feeds it.
Before a proton reaches the LHC it has already passed through a linac and three older rings — the Booster, the Proton Synchrotron, and the Super Proton Synchrotron — each a frontier accelerator in its own day, now serving as a rung in the injection chain.

The flagship ring usually cannot accelerate from rest; it accepts beams already at high energy, so a failure anywhere in the injection chain stops the whole machine, even if the main ring itself is perfectly healthy.
