Think of two specialists working back to back: one sorts a crowd of strangers into single-file order, and the second, standing right at the exit, names each person as they step out. Neither could finish the job alone, but joined together they sort and identify at the same time. A hyphenated technique is exactly this kind of teamwork between two instruments wired into one.

More precisely, a hyphenated technique couples a separation method (which spreads a mixture out into its individual components) directly to a detection or identification method (which measures or fingerprints each component as it arrives). The hyphen in names like GC-MS or LC-MS literally marks the join: the first letters are the separator, the last the detector.

The payoff is that a complex mixture can be both untangled and identified in a single automated run, which is far more powerful than either part alone. The cost is more expensive, more delicate instruments and the need to match the two halves so the output of the first suits the input of the second.

A blood sample contains dozens of drugs at once; on a GC-MS the chromatograph separates them into a row of peaks across time, and as each peak emerges the mass spectrometer records its molecular fingerprint, so the lab learns both how much of each drug is present and exactly which drug it is.

Separate first, identify second — in one continuous instrument.

The word is always read as separation-then-detection, in that order: GC-MS means gas chromatography feeding a mass spectrometer, not the reverse.
