Think of a house with a thermostat. When the room cools, the heater switches on; when it warms past the target, the heater switches off. The temperature never holds perfectly still, but it hovers around a set point. Homeostasis is the body running thousands of such thermostats at once — for temperature, blood sugar, calcium, salt, water, and much more.

Homeostasis is the maintenance of relatively stable internal conditions despite changes in the outside world. It is achieved largely through negative feedback loops: a sensor detects a deviation from a set point, and the body launches a corrective response that pushes the variable back toward target. Hormones are among the most powerful tools the body uses to do this.

Endocrinology is, in a sense, the study of homeostasis in action: insulin and glucagon keep blood glucose in range, parathyroid hormone and vitamin D guard calcium, vasopressin and aldosterone manage water and salt. A caveat: not everything the body regulates is a fixed set point. Some variables are deliberately shifted in advance of demand — anticipatory adjustment, sometimes called allostasis — so homeostasis is a powerful idea, not the whole story.

The term was coined by physiologist Walter Cannon in the 1920s, building on Claude Bernard's earlier idea of the constancy of the milieu intérieur — the internal environment.
