Home Use & Independent Operation
The capability, and the trial milestone, of a participant using a BCI in daily life without the research or clinical team present, ideally set up and operated by the user or a lay caregiver. This is a far more demanding bar than supervised in-lab performance: it requires calibration stable enough to survive days without expert intervention, robust hardware, simple donning, graceful error handling, and remote support. It is where usability and decoder stability are truly tested.
Independent home use is increasingly treated as a key outcome because it reflects real benefit and predicts sustained adoption, whereas lab-only systems tend to be abandoned. Take-home deployments also surface problems invisible in the lab, including session-to-session signal drift, environmental electrical noise, and the ongoing burden the system places on caregivers.
A study reports that a participant used a self-initiated communication BCI at home for a year with only remote support and a caregiver donning the cap. That single sentence encodes far more engineering than a lab record: the decoder held its calibration across seasons, room noise, and fatigue, without an expert resetting it each morning.
Sustained unsupervised home use is a stringent, integrative test of stability, robustness, and usability at once.
