Your brain makes thousands of judgments a day — is that person trustworthy, is this price fair, will it rain — and it has no time to gather full data for each. So it uses shortcuts: quick rules of thumb that usually give a decent answer fast. These shortcuts are called heuristics. Most of the time they serve us well, like a good mental autopilot. But because they cut corners, they also fail in regular, predictable ways, and those repeated errors are called cognitive biases.
A heuristic is a simple rule the mind applies to make a hard judgment easier (for example, 'if it feels familiar, it's probably safe'). A bias is the systematic error that such a shortcut produces. The crucial pairing, made famous by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, is that biases are not random slips — they tilt almost everyone the same direction. If a heuristic over-weights vivid information, then large numbers of people will overestimate dramatic risks (plane crashes) and underestimate dull ones (heart disease), again and again. The error is built into the shortcut, so it repeats.
This pairing is the engine of behavioral economics, because predictable errors can be studied, measured, and either guarded against or exploited. Marketers, casinos, and political campaigns lean on biases; good doctors, investors, and policymakers build checklists and rules to counteract them. The honest caveat is that heuristics are not 'bugs' to be ashamed of — they are mostly efficient and adaptive, the price we pay for fast thinking. The goal is not to eliminate them (impossible) but to know when a fast answer is likely to be the wrong one.
Asked whether more English words start with 'k' or have 'k' as the third letter, most people say the first — because words starting with 'k' come to mind faster. In fact, far more words have 'k' third. The easy-to-recall answer felt right, and that shortcut produced a predictable, shared error.

Heuristics are not the same as biases: the heuristic is the helpful shortcut, the bias is the systematic error it can produce. Most heuristics are useful most of the time.
