Hermetic encapsulation
Hermetic encapsulation is the sealing of active electronics and non-recording conductors so that body fluids cannot reach and corrode them over the intended device lifetime. Classic hermeticity relies on inorganic barriers — titanium or ceramic cases with glass or ceramic feedthroughs — and is qualified by helium leak-rate testing. These approaches are proven over decades in cardiac pacemakers and cochlear implants.
The tension for high-density cortical implants is that a rigid metal or ceramic can is bulky and stiff — exactly what a soft cortical interface is trying to avoid — and that a modern microelectrode array needs thousands of tiny feedthroughs to bring signals out. Every one of those feedthroughs and every insulation defect is a potential corrosion and leakage entry point, so scaling classical hermeticity to thousand-channel flexible devices is a central unsolved packaging problem.
