hapticity (eta notation)

When you pick something up, you can pinch it with a single fingertip or grab it with your whole palm. Hapticity describes which of these a ligand does with a metal: how many of the ligand's atoms are touching, that is bonding to, the metal at once. A ligand gripping through one atom has low hapticity; a flat ring lying face-on so that all its atoms touch the metal has high hapticity.

Chemists write hapticity with the Greek letter eta and a number, as in eta-n, where n counts the contiguous atoms bonded to the metal. An allyl group bound through only its end carbon is eta-1; bound sideways through all three of its carbons it is eta-3. A cyclopentadienyl ring can perch on one carbon as eta-1 or, far more commonly, sit flat with all five carbons engaged as eta-5; benzene can bind face-on through all six carbons as eta-6. The notation is not just decoration: it tells you how many electrons the ligand donates and therefore feeds straight into the valence electron count. An eta-5 cyclopentadienyl donates five electrons in the neutral convention, an eta-3 allyl donates three, an eta-2 alkene donates two.

Hapticity matters because it can change during a reaction, and those changes are quietly powerful. A ring that is eta-5 can slip to eta-3, freeing up two electrons' worth of room on the metal and opening a coordination site without any ligand actually leaving — a so-called ring slippage that lets an 18-electron complex react as if it had a vacancy. Reading and tracking eta values is therefore essential bookkeeping in organometallic chemistry, and getting the hapticity wrong throws off the electron count and the whole interpretation of how a complex will behave.

Ferrocene is written Fe(eta-5-C5H5)2: each cyclopentadienyl ring lies flat against the iron with all five carbons bonding, donating five electrons apiece. If one ring slipped to eta-3, it would donate only three, freeing room on the metal.

The eta number counts how many ligand atoms are bonded, and that fixes the electron count.

Hapticity (the eta number) counts atoms bonded to the metal; do not confuse it with denticity (kappa), which counts the separate donor atoms of a classical multidentate ligand.
