Every spinning thing has a hub, and the Milky Way is no exception. The galactic center is the dynamical heart of our galaxy — the point about which the entire disk of hundreds of billions of stars slowly turns. It lies in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, roughly 26,000 light-years from the Sun. If you could strip away the dust, it would be by far the brightest, densest, most crowded patch of sky, a place where stars are jammed millions of times more tightly than around the Sun.

The galactic center is a small, extraordinary region a few hundred light-years across where everything intensifies: stars swarm shoulder to shoulder, dense molecular clouds churn, powerful magnetic fields thread the gas, and at the very middle sits a supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, weighing about 4 million times the mass of the Sun. The catch is that we cannot see any of this in ordinary visible light. The disk between us and the center is choked with dust that absorbs and scatters visible photons, dimming the center's light by a factor of more than a trillion. To study it, astronomers turn to infrared, radio, and X-ray light, which slip through the dust where visible light cannot.

The galactic center matters as a natural laboratory for extreme astrophysics: nowhere else can we watch individual stars orbit a supermassive black hole, study how such black holes are fed, or probe star formation under such crushing density. Decades of patient infrared imaging of stars looping around the central dark mass earned the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. A key clarification: the galactic center is a region, not a single object, and the black hole at its core is not a cosmic drain swallowing the galaxy. Sagittarius A* governs only the innermost light-years; the disk far out is held in orbit by the galaxy's distributed mass, dark matter included, not by the central black hole.

In visible light, the galactic center is invisible — buried behind dust that dims it by more than 25 magnitudes, a factor of over ten billion. But point a radio dish or an infrared camera at the same spot and the heart of the galaxy springs into view: dense star clusters, glowing gas filaments, and the faint pinpoint of Sagittarius A* itself.

Visible light cannot reach the galactic center; infrared, radio, and X-rays pierce the dust instead.

The galactic center is a region, not a single object, and its black hole does not 'pull in' the whole galaxy — it dominates only the innermost light-years.
