FR-4 is the boring, beige-yellow material the whole board is built on — the insulating sheet that holds the copper apart and gives the board its stiffness. The name simply means Flame Retardant, type 4: it is a class of material, not a brand. If the copper traces are the roads of our electrical city, FR-4 is the ground the roads are paved on. It is so common that for most beginners, board and FR-4 mean almost the same thing.

What is it actually made of? Woven glass-fibre cloth, soaked in epoxy resin and baked hard under heat and pressure into a rigid laminate. The glass weave gives strength; the epoxy glues it solid and insulates. A typical board is 1.6 mm thick. Electrically, FR-4 is a good insulator with a dielectric constant of roughly 4.2 to 4.6 — a number that matters a lot later, because the spacing of copper above an FR-4 layer and that constant together set how fast signals travel and what trace impedance you get. It also tolerates the brief 250 C heat of soldering without melting.

Why it matters: FR-4 is cheap, strong, solderable, and an acceptable insulator up into the low GHz, which is why it dominates. But be honest about its limits. Its dielectric constant drifts a little with frequency and from batch to batch, it loses energy (loss tangent) at high frequencies, and it conducts heat poorly — about 0.3 watts per metre-kelvin, roughly a thousand times worse than copper — so it is no help cooling hot parts. For very fast or very lossy designs, engineers switch to pricier low-loss laminates like Rogers; for everything else, FR-4 is the sensible default.

A standard 1.6 mm two-layer board is FR-4 with copper on top and bottom. With a dielectric constant near 4.5, a trace of a given width over a ground layer at a known spacing comes out to a predictable impedance — that is why fabs publish their FR-4 stack-up dimensions.

Glass cloth plus epoxy: cheap, stiff, solderable, but a poor conductor of heat.

FR-4 is not one exact material — its dielectric constant and thickness vary by maker and batch. If your design depends on a precise trace impedance, do not assume; ask the fab for their actual stack-up numbers.
