four-velocity

Four-velocity is the relativistic upgrade of ordinary velocity. Everyday velocity asks how fast your position changes per second of someone's clock; four-velocity asks how fast your spacetime position changes per second of your own clock — the proper time ticking along your worldline. Because proper time is a quantity every observer agrees on, the four-velocity built from it is a genuine four-vector, transforming cleanly under the Lorentz transformation where plain velocity does not.

Geometrically, the four-velocity is the arrow tangent to your worldline, pointing in the direction you are heading through spacetime. A standing-still object's four-velocity points straight up the time axis: it is not moving through space, but it is still 'moving' through time at full tilt. As the object speeds up through space, the arrow tips over toward the spatial direction, trading some of its motion through time for motion through space — which is one way to picture why fast-moving clocks run slow.

Here is the surprising punchline: no matter how fast or slow an object travels, the Minkowski length of its four-velocity is always exactly c. Everything moves through spacetime at the speed of light. When you sit still, all of that 'speed' is spent travelling through time; when you race through space, you divert some of it sideways, leaving less for time. This fixed total length is not a coincidence but a definition working itself out, and it is the geometric reason the cosmic speed limit and time dilation are two sides of one coin.

Four-velocity is the rate of change of position per unit proper time; its Minkowski length is fixed at c.

The slogan 'everything moves through spacetime at the speed of light' is a vivid way to remember that |U| = c, but it is a property of the four-velocity, not a claim that your ordinary 3D speed is c. Photons are a special case: they have no proper time, so four-velocity is not defined for them.
