In everyday physics you keep two separate ledgers for a moving object: its energy (how much oomph it carries) and its momentum (how much push it has in a direction). Special relativity reveals that these are not really separate — they are two faces of one object, the way a person's height and width are two views of one body. That single object is the four-momentum: a bundle of four numbers that travel together, one for energy and three for momentum along the x, y, and z directions.

Why bundle them? Because different observers, moving at different speeds, disagree about a particle's energy and about each component of its momentum, just as two people standing at different angles disagree about how wide a table looks. But they all agree on how the four numbers transform together, and they all agree on one combination built from them — the invariant mass. Treating energy and momentum as a single four-component object makes the equations of fast particles clean and frame-independent. In natural units, the four-momentum's parts are simply the energy E and the three momentum components.

Four-momentum is the central accounting tool of particle physics. The grand rule is that total four-momentum is conserved in any interaction: add up the four-momenta of everything going into a collision and it equals the sum coming out, energy and all three momentum directions balancing separately. From this single law flow the reconstruction of invisible particles, the calculation of thresholds for making new ones, and the analysis of every decay. When a physicist says a process 'conserves four-momentum,' they mean energy and momentum are both books that must balance.

A four-momentum is written (E, px, py, pz). Conservation means the summed (E, px, py, pz) before a collision equals the summed (E, px, py, pz) after.
