formulation

A formulation is the recipe and design that combines the active drug with its excipients into a finished dosage form. Like a cake recipe, it lists not only the ingredients and their amounts but the rationale: why each component is present and how they work together to give a stable, effective, acceptable medicine.

Formulation development is the heart of much pharmaceutics work. The formulator selects excipients, decides proportions, and chooses a manufacturing process so that the product dissolves correctly, stays stable on the shelf, can be made reliably at scale and is pleasant enough that patients will take it.

A good formulation balances competing demands. Adding more disintegrant speeds dissolution but may weaken the tablet; a higher preservative level improves microbial safety but risks irritation. Modern practice often uses Quality by Design to map these trade-offs systematically rather than by trial and error alone.
