fluorescence and phosphorescence

A highlighter pen seems to glow under a blacklight, and a toy star sticker keeps shining for minutes after you switch the lights off. Both are molecules that have soaked up light and are giving it back out — but one returns it almost at once, while the other hoards it and releases it slowly. The instant glow is fluorescence; the lingering afterglow is phosphorescence.
After a molecule absorbs light and is lifted to an excited electronic state, it can shed that energy by emitting a photon. In fluorescence the molecule drops back almost immediately, within billionths of a second, because the return is quantum-mechanically easy. In phosphorescence the molecule first slips into a special, longer-lived excited state from which the return jump is forbidden by selection rules, so it is trapped there and leaks light out slowly — for seconds, minutes, or even longer.
These processes matter hugely in practice: fluorescent labels light up specific molecules in biology, fluorescent dyes brighten clothes and screens, and phosphorescent materials glow in the dark. The key distinction to hold onto is timing and mechanism — fluorescence is fast and from an ordinary excited state, phosphorescence is slow because the molecule is stuck in a state it can only leave reluctantly. Both also emit at lower energy (longer wavelength) than the light absorbed, since some energy is lost as heat first.
Tonic water glows faint blue under ultraviolet light because the quinine it contains is fluorescent — it absorbs the invisible UV and re-emits it instantly as visible blue. A glow-in-the-dark watch dial does the opposite trick: it stores the energy and shines for minutes through phosphorescence after the room goes dark.
Fluorescence glows the instant the light hits; phosphorescence keeps glowing after.
Both differ from incandescence, the glow of a hot object: fluorescence and phosphorescence are 'cold' light, produced by absorbed photons rather than by heat, which is why a fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark object stays cool to the touch.
