Imagine soap bubbles drifting together into a loose, airy cluster that you can pull apart again with a gentle puff. Flocculation in a suspension is just like that: the solid particles gather into loose, open clumps called flocs, held together weakly, with liquid trapped in the spaces between them.
These flocs settle fairly quickly, but because they are loose and bulky they pile up into a high, fluffy sediment full of liquid channels. Crucially, the weak bonds holding a floc together are easily broken, so a single shake redisperses the particles into a uniform suspension again. This is what makes a flocculated suspension easy to use, even though it may look cloudy or settle visibly.
Formulators often deliberately induce controlled flocculation by adding small amounts of electrolytes, surfactants, or polymers that lower the inter-particle repulsion just enough to let particles cling loosely without bonding tightly. The aim is a suspension that settles into a redispersible floc rather than a hard cake — the opposite of, and usually preferable to, a deflocculated system for pharmaceutical use.
Flocculation is reversible (a shake redisperses the flocs), unlike coalescence or caking; in emulsions, flocculated droplets clump but each droplet keeps its own film and has not yet merged.
