Flexible / soft electrode

A flexible or soft electrode is built on a compliant polymer substrate — parylene C, polyimide, SU-8, or an elastomer such as PDMS — instead of a rigid silicon or metal shank, deliberately lowering bending stiffness to better match the mechanics of brain tissue. Thin metal or conducting-polymer traces are patterned on or between these polymer layers to carry the neural signal.

The defining engineering tradeoff is insertion. A floppy probe buckles under the axial load required to penetrate the pia, so flexible devices depend on temporary stiffening strategies: dissolvable shuttles or microneedles, biodegradable coatings such as polyethylene glycol or silk that stiffen the probe until they dissolve, or direct injection. In return, a well-designed flexible electrode provokes a thinner glial sheath, reduces micromotion-driven re-injury, and can record more stably over long periods.
