Ferritin-Based Magnetogenetics Controversy
Several high-profile constructs proposed that fusing the iron-storage protein ferritin to a TRP channel would let a magnetic field directly gate that channel within a single cell, with no synthetic nanoparticle — for example channels tethered to overexpressed ferritin, or complexes built on a putative magnetoreceptor protein. If real, this would be the most elegant magnetogenetic tool imaginable.
A careful physics analysis argued that the magnetic moment of a ferritin core is so small that the force, torque, and heating a laboratory field could exert on it fall short of what is needed to gate a channel by many orders of magnitude — well below the thermal energy scale of the membrane. Combined with difficulties reproducing the behavioural effects, the mechanism remains unresolved and widely doubted. The episode is a standing lesson in the field: a magnetic write channel that seems too physically favourable to be true usually is, and demonstrated behaviour is not by itself evidence of the proposed mechanism.
