Fermi paradox

Over lunch one day in 1950, the physicist Enrico Fermi reportedly blurted out a simple question that has haunted the search for alien life ever since: 'Where is everybody?' The galaxy is vast and ancient — hundreds of billions of stars, many far older than the Sun — so if intelligent life is at all common, the galaxy should be teeming with it, and some of it should have reached us or left obvious traces long ago. Yet we see nothing. The Fermi paradox is the sharp contradiction between the expectation that life should be widespread and the stark fact that we have no evidence of any.

The argument runs like this. Give a single spacefaring civilization even modest, slow technology and millions of years — a blink compared with the galaxy's age — and it could spread across the whole Milky Way. The galaxy is billions of years old, with ample time for many civilizations to have arisen and explored. So the silence is genuinely puzzling: not just that we have not been visited, but that the sky is quiet, with no signals, no megastructures, no sign of anyone. The 'paradox' is that great age plus modest odds of life seems to predict a crowded galaxy, while observation shows an empty-looking one.

There is no agreed resolution, only a menu of possibilities, each sobering in its own way. Maybe life is vanishingly rare, or intelligence is, or technological civilizations routinely destroy themselves or fall silent quickly (a 'Great Filter' somewhere along the path). Maybe they are out there but too far, too quiet, or too alien for us to notice, or they deliberately avoid us. Maybe we simply have not looked long or hard enough. The Fermi paradox matters because it forces us to confront how little we know, and because every proposed answer carries heavy implications for our own future.

If even one civilization had begun slowly colonizing the galaxy a hundred million years ago, it could have reached every star system by now — a hundred million years is brief next to the galaxy's ten-billion-year age. That it apparently has not is the puzzle Fermi's simple question lays bare.

If life were common, the galaxy should be loud — yet it looks silent. Why?

The Fermi paradox has no agreed solution; the apparent silence may reflect that life or intelligence is rare, that civilizations are short-lived, or merely that we have not searched enough.
