extra spatial dimensions
We move through three directions of space — left-right, forward-back, up-down — and that feels like the complete set. But some theories suggest there could be more directions, ones we never notice because they are curled up impossibly small or because we are stuck on a thin surface within them. A classic picture: a garden hose seen from far away looks like a one-dimensional line, but an ant on it knows there is a second direction running around its circumference. Extra spatial dimensions are like that hidden loop, but for the whole universe.
There are two flavours of the idea. In one, the extra dimensions are 'compactified' — rolled up so tightly, perhaps a billion-trillionth the size of an atom, that you would need fantastically high energy to feel them. In the other, called brane worlds, our familiar particles are confined to a three-dimensional 'sheet' floating in a higher-dimensional bulk, and only gravity is allowed to leak into the extra space. Either way, a particle given enough energy could in principle start exploring the hidden directions, showing up as a ladder of heavier copies of known particles, or as energy mysteriously vanishing into the bulk.
Extra dimensions matter to particle physics mainly as a possible cure for the hierarchy problem — the puzzle of why gravity is so absurdly weaker than the other forces. If gravity is diluted by spreading into extra dimensions while the other forces stay trapped on our sheet, its apparent feebleness could be explained. The honest status: collider searches for the predicted signatures, such as missing energy or heavy 'tower' particles, have found nothing, ruling out the most dramatic versions. Extra dimensions remain a live theoretical possibility, not an observed fact.
If gravity leaks into extra dimensions, a high-energy collision might fling a graviton off into the hidden space; on our detectors that would look like a burst of visible particles recoiling against a large chunk of simply missing energy.

These hypothetical dimensions are extra directions of space, not the way physicists loosely call time 'the fourth dimension'. They are also completely unconfirmed — no experiment has shown a single extra dimension exists.
