Salt on an icy road is the everyday eutectic. Salt does not make ice hotter — it lowers the temperature at which ice and salty water can coexist, so ice that was frozen at 0 degrees C now melts at minus ten or lower. Mixing two things together can give a mixture that melts far below either pure ingredient. The lowest point of that melting valley, the composition that melts at the single lowest temperature, is the eutectic. The word is Greek for easily melted, and that is exactly what it is.

On a binary diagram a eutectic shows up as the bottom of a V where two liquidus lines swoop down and meet. At that point a single reaction happens on cooling: liquid transforms directly into two solids at once, written L to alpha + beta. Because three phases coexist there (two solids and liquid), the phase rule pins it hard: for a binary at fixed pressure F = C - P + 1 = 2 - 3 + 1 = 0. Zero degrees of freedom, an invariant point — the eutectic sits at one exact composition and one exact temperature, and the whole remaining liquid freezes there without the temperature changing, giving a characteristic fine, intimate two-phase texture.

For a ceramist the eutectic is where the action starts and stops. On heating, it is the lowest temperature at which any liquid appears, so it sets the firing temperature at which a glassy bond forms and the ceiling above which a refractory softens and fails. Fluxes such as feldspar are added to whiteware precisely to create a low eutectic and pull the vitrification temperature down to something a kiln can reach. And a eutectic in the impurity oxides is often the hidden reason a refractory that should survive to 1800 degrees C actually slumps at 1400.

Add potash feldspar to a porcelain body as a flux. Alone, silica melts near 1723 degrees C — far too hot for a kiln. But the feldspar-silica-alumina eutectics let liquid appear near 1200 to 1250 degrees C, and that early liquid dissolves and bonds the grains, vitrifying the porcelain at a reachable firing temperature. The eutectic is the whole reason the recipe works.

The eutectic is the lowest pass where liquid first appears — L to two solids, an invariant point with F = 0.

A eutectic is the lowest-melting mixture, not the melting point of either pure component — and it is not a compound. It is a fixed composition that freezes to an intimate blend of two separate solids, each keeping its own structure.
