Imagine sending a message to everyone in a huge country at once by putting it on the national radio. You do not know exactly who is listening, but anyone with a radio tuned to the right station hears it. Endocrine signaling is the body's national broadcast: a gland releases a chemical into the bloodstream, which carries it everywhere, and only cells tuned to that message — the ones with the matching receptor — respond.

Endocrine signaling is long-distance communication using hormones carried through the blood. A specialized endocrine gland (such as the thyroid, pancreas, or adrenal gland) secretes a hormone into the circulation; the blood distributes it throughout the body, so it can act on distant target cells far from where it was made. Only cells bearing the right receptor respond, which is how one hormone can affect tissues all over the body in a coordinated way. Because the blood is slow compared with a nerve impulse and the hormone lingers, endocrine signals are typically slower to start but longer-lasting than other kinds of signaling.

Endocrine signaling coordinates the body's big, slow, whole-body programs: growth, metabolism, the stress response, the daily sleep cycle, puberty, and pregnancy. Its slow, broadcast nature is both a strength and a weakness — a single hormone can orchestrate the whole body, but a fault has body-wide effects, as in diabetes (insulin) or thyroid disease. A common misconception is that hormones 'target' specific organs by traveling only to them; in reality a hormone reaches nearly every cell, and the targeting comes entirely from which cells happen to carry its receptor.

After a meal, your pancreas releases insulin into the blood. The insulin reaches nearly every cell, but it mainly affects muscle, fat, and liver — the tissues carrying insulin receptors — telling them to take up sugar. One gland, one molecule, a whole-body shift in how the body handles food.

A hormone reaches every cell, but only receptor-bearing tissues respond.

A hormone does not 'aim' at an organ — it floods the whole body through the blood, and targeting comes entirely from which cells carry its receptor. Endocrine signals are slow to start but long-lasting.
