endocrine axis
An endocrine axis is the chain of command in a hormone bureaucracy. A general at the top (the hypothalamus) issues an order to a manager (the pituitary), who relays it to a worker on the ground (a peripheral gland like the thyroid or adrenal). Each level speaks to the next using its own hormone, and the worker's output reports back up the chain.
An endocrine axis is a hierarchical hormone pathway linking the hypothalamus, the pituitary, and a peripheral target gland. The hypothalamus releases a releasing hormone, which prompts the pituitary to secrete a tropic hormone, which in turn drives the peripheral gland to produce its final hormone. Classic examples include the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, -thyroid, and -gonadal axes.
The defining feature of an axis is feedback: the final hormone usually inhibits the upper levels, so the whole system self-corrects toward a stable level — a built-in cruise control. A caveat: this layered design has clinical power because measuring two levels at once (for instance, a low peripheral hormone with a high tropic hormone) tells a clinician exactly which floor of the building has failed.
