Voltage regulator

A voltage regulator is the circuit that takes a sloppy, varying input voltage and delivers a rock-steady output — say a clean 3.3 V — no matter how the input wobbles or how much current the load suddenly demands. It is the unsung guardian of every chip on a board: digital logic and sensors misbehave if their supply sags, so a regulator stands between the messy raw power and the delicate circuitry.

A linear regulator works like a smart automatic valve (a transistor) that constantly throttles the flow to hold the output exactly on target, comparing it against an internal reference using negative feedback. It is quiet and simple but burns the excess voltage as heat. A low-dropout (LDO) version can regulate even when input is only a fraction of a volt above output — handy for battery devices where every millivolt counts.

P_dissipated = (V_in − V_out) · I_load (the heat a linear regulator must shed)

Linear vs switching is the key choice: a linear/LDO regulator is cheap and electrically quiet but wastes (V_in−V_out)·I as heat, while a switching regulator (buck/boost) reaches 90%+ efficiency but adds noise and complexity.
