switching vs. linear regulation

Two rival ways to step a voltage down. A linear regulator is like a dimmer switch that burns the excess as heat: to drop 12 V to 5 V at 1 A, it throws away (12-5)×1 = 7 W as warmth, no matter how clever you are. A switching regulator instead chops the input into a fast on/off stream and filters it smooth, so almost no energy is wasted — it can hit 90-95% efficiency where a linear part might manage only 42%.

The trade-off is noise and complexity. Linear regulators are dead-quiet and simple, perfect for a sensitive sensor rail; switchers are efficient but spray high-frequency ripple and need an inductor, a fast diode or MOSFET, and careful layout. Modern designs often cascade them: a switcher does the heavy lifting, then a small linear regulator polishes the output clean.

Rule of thumb: if the voltage drop times current exceeds about 1 W, a switcher usually pays for itself in heat saved.
