Motor drive (VFD / VSD)
A motor drive is the electronic 'brain and muscle' that sits between the power supply and an AC motor, letting you control its speed and torque instead of running it flat-out off the mains. The most common form, a variable-frequency drive, first rectifies the incoming AC to DC, then uses fast-switching transistors to synthesise a fresh three-phase AC of any frequency and voltage it likes. Since an AC motor's speed follows its supply frequency, dialling the frequency dials the speed — run a 50 Hz motor at 25 Hz and it turns at half speed.
Drives transformed industry: a pump or fan that once ran full-speed and was throttled with a valve can now simply be slowed, and because fan power scales with the cube of speed, slowing it 20% can cut energy use by nearly half — the single biggest motor-efficiency win in factories. The same hardware, with smarter control software (field-oriented control), turns a humble motor into a precise, instantly-responsive servo for robots and electric cars.
The fast switching that makes a drive efficient also generates electrical noise and steep voltage edges that can stress motor insulation and cause EMI, so drives need careful filtering, shielded cables, and proper grounding.
