Modem
A modem — short for modulator-demodulator — is the translator that lets a digital device speak over an analog medium. On the way out it modulates: it takes your stream of 1s and 0s and shapes them onto a carrier the channel can carry, whether that's tones on a phone line, radio waves to a cell tower, or light down a fibre. On the way in it demodulates: it listens to the messy analog waveform that arrives and reconstructs the original bits. Every cable box, DSL line, 5G phone, Wi-Fi card, and satellite dish contains one.
A modern modem is far more than a simple modulator: it's a dense bundle of everything in this field working in concert — adaptive QAM, OFDM, equalisers that undo channel distortion, matched filters, clock-recovery loops, and powerful forward-error-correction decoders, all racing in real time to hit the Shannon limit. The screech of a 1990s dial-up modem connecting was literally the sound of two of them negotiating the fastest reliable modulation the noisy phone line could support that day — a brief, audible handshake before the conversation began.
The familiar dial-up screech was a feature, not a bug: the two modems played tones at each other to probe the line's bandwidth and noise, then agreed on a modulation — and once connected, they muted the speaker.
