Grid frequency

Grid frequency is the heartbeat of the entire power system — the rate at which the AC voltage flips back and forth, fixed at 50 Hz in most of the world and 60 Hz in the Americas. Every generator spinning on the grid is locked into this same rhythm, like dancers who must all step in time; if one tries to speed up, the others physically drag it back into sync through the wires that connect them.

What makes frequency the grid's single most important number is that it instantly betrays the balance between supply and demand. If load suddenly exceeds generation, the spinning turbines give up rotational energy to fill the gap and they slow down, so frequency dips below 50 Hz; if generation exceeds load, frequency rises. Operators watch it like a vital sign: a sustained drop of even 0.5 Hz triggers automatic load shedding, and the stored kinetic energy in all those spinning masses — the grid's 'inertia' — is what buys the precious seconds needed to respond before a small imbalance cascades into a blackout.

The slow drift of grid frequency over a day used to be corrected at night to keep mains-synchronised clocks accurate — a quirk that vanished as digital clocks took over. Frequency is now an exact-time reference good to parts per billion when averaged.
