a specification

Before you build anything, you have to agree on what done looks like. If a friend asks you to build them an amplifier and you both leave it at the word amplifier, you are guaranteed an argument later — they wanted a quiet headphone amp, you built a 50 watt monster. A specification is the written, numbered agreement that says exactly what the circuit must do and how well, so that the words mean the same thing to everyone and so you can later prove, with a meter, that you succeeded.

A good spec turns wishes into numbers with units, and pairs every number with a condition. Not loud enough but output at least 1 watt into 8 ohms. Not low power but draw under 10 mA from 3.3 V in standby. Not accurate but read temperature to plus or minus 0.5 degrees C over 0 to 60 degrees C. A complete spec covers the inputs and outputs, the supply, the environment (temperature, humidity), the accuracy and tolerances, the size, the cost target, and any standards it must meet. Each line should be testable: if you cannot picture the measurement that proves it, the line is not yet a spec, it is a hope.

The honest themes of mastery start here. The spec is where you separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves, because trying to make everything excellent makes nothing affordable. An over-tight spec (read to 0.001 degrees when 0.5 is plenty) silently multiplies cost, power, and schedule; a too-loose spec lets a useless product pass its own test. The hardest and most valuable engineering often happens here, in conversation, before a single component is chosen — and a spec that quietly changes mid-project is one of the surest ways for a design to fail.

Vague: make a good temperature logger. As a spec: measure -10 to +50 degrees C to within plus or minus 0.3 degrees C, log every 60 s for 30 days, run from one AA cell, fit in a 40 by 25 mm box, cost under 12 dollars in parts. Now every line can be checked with a meter, a clock, and a ruler.

A spec line you cannot measure is a wish, not a requirement.

Beware spec creep: features quietly added after work begins. Each one seems small, but together they blow the budget, the schedule, and the design margins you carefully reserved.
