Dynamic testing means measuring not just one hormone level, but how that hormone behaves when the body is deliberately pushed or pulled. Rather than photographing a runner standing still, it films them in motion: a challenge is given, and timed blood samples track the hormone's response over minutes or hours. The shape of that response is the diagnostic information.

This approach exists because single, static measurements often cannot settle a question. Hormones pulse, swing with circadian rhythm, and overlap heavily between health and disease at any one instant. A provocation test that drives a gland toward its maximum, or a suppression test that pushes it toward its minimum, exposes capacities and failures that a resting snapshot would hide.

Dynamic protocols come in two broad flavors: stimulation tests, which probe a gland's ability to ramp up and so detect deficiency, and suppression tests, which probe whether secretion can be shut off and so detect autonomous excess. Both rely on a precise, standardized protocol — defined dose, timing, and sampling schedule — because the interpretation depends entirely on comparing the measured trajectory against an expected normal one.

Dynamic testing is also how diabetes is diagnosed: the oral glucose tolerance test is a stimulation-style protocol that watches blood glucose and insulin respond to a fixed sugar load over two hours.
