A drug delivery system is a formulation or device engineered not merely to contain a drug but to control where, when and how fast it is delivered. Think of the difference between simply dropping a teabag in hot water and a slow-drip coffee machine that releases flavour steadily over minutes: both deliver the same substance, but one shapes the release.
Drug delivery systems range from a sustained-release tablet whose matrix lets the drug seep out over twelve hours, to a transdermal patch metering medicine through the skin, to a nanoparticle designed to carry a drug toward a tumour. The shared idea is engineered control over the time-course and location of drug release.
Such control can improve effectiveness, reduce side effects and let patients dose once a day rather than four times. But added sophistication brings cost, manufacturing complexity and new risks, such as dose dumping if a controlled-release system fails. The simplest system that meets the clinical need is usually best.
