Medical Genetics & Genetic Counseling

direct-to-consumer testing

Direct-to-consumer genetic testing is genetics sold like any other product: a person orders a kit, mails in a saliva sample, and receives results online — all without a doctor ordering the test or a counselor explaining it. The appeal is convenience, curiosity, and direct access to one’s own data.

Such tests range from ancestry estimates and harmless traits to reports on certain disease-associated variants and drug responses. Crucially, many examine only a handful of common variants in a gene, not its full sequence, so they can miss real risk and are not the same as a thorough clinical test.

The convenience comes with caveats. Results can be misread without expert context, a reassuring report does not rule out disease, and an alarming one can cause distress over a finding that means little in isolation. Important health results from such tests are best confirmed and interpreted in a clinical setting.
