Deoxyribose is the small sugar that, together with phosphate, forms the structural rails of DNA. It is the part of each nucleotide that connects to its neighbors and holds the information-carrying base in place. The very name DNA — deoxyribonucleic acid — points to this sugar.
Chemically, deoxyribose is a five-carbon sugar. Its name tells its story: it is ribose, the sugar found in RNA, but missing one oxygen atom at a particular position (deoxy means without oxygen). That single missing oxygen is the chemical difference that distinguishes DNA's sugar from RNA's.
Inside a strand, the carbons of deoxyribose serve as attachment points: one connects to the nitrogenous base, others link through phosphate to the sugars before and after it. The numbering of these carbons (3' and 5') is where the directionality of a DNA strand comes from.
That small missing oxygen has a big consequence: it makes DNA chemically more stable than RNA. The stability is part of why DNA, not RNA, is used for long-term storage of genetic information in cells, while RNA tends to be a shorter-lived working copy.
