When you stream a show or run a search, it feels weightless — nothing physical seems to happen. But somewhere a building full of computers burned real electricity to serve you, and making that electricity often released carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The datacenter carbon footprint is the honest accounting of the climate impact behind cloud computing: the greenhouse-gas emissions caused by running the world's datacenters, plus the emissions from building them and manufacturing all that hardware in the first place. The convenient illusion that the cloud is immaterial is exactly what this concept exists to puncture.
It helps to separate two kinds of footprint. Operational emissions come from the electricity the datacenter consumes while running — and crucially, how clean that electricity is depends on the grid: the same computation emits a lot of carbon on a coal-heavy grid and very little on a hydro-, wind-, or solar-heavy one. This is why efficiency metrics like PUE and energy proportionality matter for emissions, but only partly: they reduce how much electricity you use, while the grid's carbon intensity decides how dirty each unit is. Embodied emissions come from manufacturing the chips, boards, and buildings, plus the resources consumed in operation such as water for cooling. A full footprint counts all of it, and a low PUE alone does not make a coal-powered datacenter clean.
This matters because datacenters are a large and fast-growing share of global electricity demand, and that growth is accelerating with the surge in machine-learning workloads, which are especially power-hungry. The honest framing is that the industry has made enormous strides in efficiency — modern datacenters do far more computing per watt than a decade ago — yet total demand keeps climbing because we keep asking for vastly more computing. Efficiency gains and absolute growth are pulling in opposite directions, and the footprint is the metric that keeps both in view.
Be honest and avoid both traps. It is greenwashing to imply the cloud is 'clean' just because one operator buys renewable energy on paper while the local grid still burns fossil fuels; it is equally misleading to imply computing is hopelessly dirty when efficiency and clean-energy procurement have genuinely cut emissions per unit of work. The truthful picture is a real and rising environmental cost, partly offset by real engineering and clean-energy progress, with a persistent gap between the efficiency a datacenter could achieve and what it actually delivers. Naming that gap, rather than hiding it, is the whole point of measuring the footprint.
Two datacenters do identical work and both achieve a great PUE of 1.1. One runs on a coal-heavy grid; the other on hydro and wind. Same electricity used, but the first emits many times more carbon per request. Efficiency (PUE) and cleanliness (grid carbon intensity) are different levers, and you need both.
