Coverage vs density tradeoff

With a fixed budget of channels, power, and heat, a designer must choose between spreading sites thinly over a large brain area (broad coverage) and packing them densely over a small area (high local resolution). Broad coverage captures distributed and inter-areal structure but undersamples any one region; dense sampling resolves and stabilises local populations but is blind to everything outside its patch.

The right point on this tradeoff is task-dependent: a motor decoder may do well with dense sampling of one area, whereas studying cognition or building a general-purpose interface argues for coverage. Reconfigurable probes that can select which of their many sites to read at any moment are one engineering response, letting the same hardware move along the tradeoff curve.
