Sometimes the trouble is not that people want different things, but that they want the same thing and just need to match. Two friends get cut off mid-call and both want to reconnect — but if both redial at once they get a busy signal, and if both wait they sit in silence. They aren't enemies; they simply need to coordinate on who does what. A coordination game is any situation where players do best when they make matching, compatible choices, and the real challenge is choosing the same one out of several equally good options.

What makes coordination games distinctive is that they have multiple Nash equilibria, all fine as long as everyone lands on the same one. 'We both meet at the cafe' and 'we both meet at the park' might be equally good; the disaster is one going to each. Pure logic can't pick between two equally good equilibria — so how do people manage? Thomas Schelling's answer was the focal point (or Schelling point): a choice that stands out as obvious for reasons outside the payoffs themselves — tradition, salience, a landmark, a round number, shared culture. Schelling found that when he asked strangers where they'd meet in New York with no way to communicate, a striking number named Grand Central Station at noon, not because it paid more, but because it was the obvious 'natural' answer everyone could expect everyone else to think of.

Coordination games and focal points explain how societies settle on conventions without anyone in charge: which side of the road to drive on, which language to speak in a meeting, which technology standard wins, where a market forms, even why money has value (it's worth something only if everyone expects everyone else to accept it). The practical insight is that solving a coordination problem is often less about incentives and more about shared expectations and a visible signal everyone can point to — a default, a leader's announcement, or a long-standing custom that turns 'which one?' into 'obviously that one.'

Two people lose each other in a huge shopping mall, with dead phones. Where do they go? Many would head for the main entrance, or the big fountain in the center — the obvious meeting spot. Nobody decreed it; it is simply the focal point each expects the other to expect. That shared, unspoken guess is what lets them reunite.

A focal point can be arbitrary and need not be the fairest or most efficient option — it just needs to be the one everyone expects everyone else to choose. Shared expectations, not payoffs, do the work.
