Consistency is the everyday word for how thick, firm, or stiff a semisolid product feels, the property you judge when you rub a cream between your fingers or scoop an ointment from a jar. Is it soft and spreadable, or stiff and waxy? Does it feel grainy or smooth? Consistency is the sensory, qualitative experience that rheology then tries to pin down with numbers.

Although it sounds vague, consistency is shaped by measurable rheological properties: viscosity, yield value, and viscoelasticity together determine whether a product holds its shape, spreads easily, or drags. Pharmacopoeias define semisolid dosage forms partly by consistency, and it can be assessed instrumentally, for example with a penetrometer that measures how deeply a standard cone sinks into the sample under its own weight in a fixed time.

Consistency matters for patient acceptability and dose delivery alike. A cream that is too stiff is unpleasant and hard to apply evenly; one that is too soft runs off the skin and may not deliver a uniform dose. Consistency should also stay stable over the product's shelf life, since changes on storage (a paste hardening, an ointment softening, or a cream becoming gritty) can signal physical instability and affect performance.

Petrolatum-based ointments are chosen for a stiff, occlusive consistency, whereas an oil-in-water cream is formulated for a lighter, more spreadable consistency that patients prefer for daytime use.
