condensation (dehydration) reaction

To join two paper chains you give up a little tape; to link two beads on a string you might trim a thread. Cells link their building blocks by a similar small sacrifice — they squeeze out one tiny water molecule each time they join two pieces. That join-and-release-water step is the condensation reaction, and it is how life builds nearly all its big molecules.

In a condensation reaction, two molecules are bonded together and a single molecule of water (H2O) is lost in the process — which is why it is also called dehydration synthesis ('removing water to build'). Typically one partner gives up a hydrogen (-H) and the other gives up a hydroxyl (-OH); the H and OH combine into water and depart, leaving a new covalent bond welding the two partners together. Picture two amino acids approaching: the carboxyl of one and the amino of the other release a water, and a peptide bond snaps shut between them. The same logic links sugars into chains and nucleotides into nucleic acids. Building up costs energy and is driven, in cells, by activated, energy-loaded building blocks.

Condensation is the universal stitch of the polymer world. Every protein, every strand of DNA or RNA, every starch and glycogen molecule was assembled monomer by monomer, each link costing one water. Recognizing this lets you see the deep unity beneath very different molecules: they are all chains made by repeatedly removing water. The reverse — adding water to break a bond — is hydrolysis, the demolition partner of this construction.

Linking the amino acid glycine to alanine forms a dipeptide and releases exactly one molecule of water; chain a hundred amino acids this way and you have spent ninety-nine waters to build one short protein.

Build a bond, lose a water.

Condensation does not happen on its own just because two monomers float nearby — building polymers takes energy and, in cells, energized building blocks and enzymes. Water is the by-product, not the driver.
