Comparative genomics is the study of life by lining up the genomes of different species side by side and seeing what they share and where they diverge. It is a bit like comparing many editions of an ancient text: the passages that stay identical across all of them are probably the important ones.

When a stretch of DNA has changed very little across distantly related species over millions of years, that conservation is a strong hint it does something essential — evolution tends to weed out harmful changes in important regions. Comparing genomes therefore helps pinpoint functional genes and regulatory elements, and reveals how new genes arise, duplicate, or are lost.

Beyond function, these comparisons reconstruct evolutionary history, showing how species are related and when their lineages split. The approach relies on accurately aligning sequences and choosing meaningful species to compare; misaligned or poorly chosen genomes can mislead, so conclusions are strongest when many genomes agree.
