Sweat cools your skin because evaporating water carries heat away as it escapes into the air. A dilution refrigerator uses a strange cousin of this trick to reach temperatures hundreds of times colder than liquid helium alone — down to thousandths of a degree above absolute zero, the coldest places routinely made on Earth.

Its secret is that helium comes in two kinds, called isotopes: the common helium-4 and the rare, lighter helium-3. At very low temperatures these two refuse to mix freely, and instead settle into two layers, like oil over water. The machine continuously pulls helium-3 atoms from the rich upper layer down across the boundary into the dilute lower layer; this crossing absorbs heat, much as evaporation does, and because it keeps working even at extreme cold, it can chill the experiment far below what evaporation alone could reach.

This matters because the most delicate quantum effects — the behavior of qubits in quantum computers, fractional quantum Hall states, the faintest electronic order — only survive when thermal noise is hushed almost completely, and the dilution refrigerator is the standard machine that gets there continuously, not just in a brief pulse. The honest caveat is that it is large, costly, and slow: cooling down can take a day or more, it depends on scarce helium-3, and any heat carelessly let in undoes the long climb downward.

Today's superconducting quantum computers live at the bottom of a dilution refrigerator, kept near 10 thousandths of a degree above absolute zero so that stray heat does not scramble the fragile quantum states of their qubits.

The cooling power comes from mixing the two helium isotopes, not from compressing a gas the way a kitchen fridge does. That is exactly why it is called a 'dilution' refrigerator — it dilutes helium-3 into helium-4.
