Imagine trying to weed a garden by spraying a chemical that harms fast-growing plants. The weeds, which grow quickest, take the biggest hit — but some of your fast-growing vegetables get hurt too. Two of the oldest, most widely used cancer treatments work on a similar principle: they hit cells that are actively dividing. Because cancer cells divide more often than most healthy cells, they are hit harder — but this is also why these treatments have side effects.
More precisely, chemotherapy uses drugs that interfere with cell division — for example by damaging DNA, blocking its copying, or jamming the machinery that pulls chromosomes apart during mitosis. Radiation therapy uses focused beams of high-energy rays to damage the DNA inside cells; a cell with badly damaged DNA cannot divide and is often pushed into apoptosis. Both exploit the same vulnerability: dividing cells are far more sensitive to DNA damage, partly because they have less time to repair it and because their checkpoints, like p53, may trigger self-destruction. The faster and more constantly a cell divides, the more vulnerable it is.
These treatments matter because they remain frontline tools that have cured or controlled many cancers. But their reliance on targeting division explains their classic side effects: the body's own fast-dividing healthy cells — in hair follicles, the gut lining, and bone marrow — also get hit, causing hair loss, nausea, and low blood counts. Newer 'targeted' and immunotherapies aim to be more selective. A common misconception is that chemotherapy 'cures cancer' as a single thing; in reality it is many different drugs, used in carefully chosen combinations and doses, and its success varies enormously by cancer type and stage.
Hair loss during chemotherapy is not the drug 'attacking hair'; it is a side effect of how the drug works. Hair-follicle cells divide very rapidly, so a drug aimed at dividing cancer cells hits them too. When treatment ends and the follicles recover, hair usually grows back.
These treatments hit dividing cells — cancerous and healthy alike.
Side effects like hair loss and nausea come from healthy fast-dividing cells being hit too; chemotherapy is not one drug but many, with very different uses and success rates.
