When you want to check whether your kitchen scale is honest, the best test is a coin you know weighs exactly five grams from the mint. A certified reference material is the lab's version of that trusted coin: a sample whose contents have been measured by the best methods and come with a certificate stating exactly what is in it, and how sure we are.

A certified reference material is a stable, well-characterised material — a powder, solution, alloy or biological tissue — accompanied by a certificate that states the value of one or more properties together with its uncertainty and a statement of metrological traceability. You run it through your own method, and if your result matches the certified value within the stated uncertainty, you have evidence your method is accurate.

It matters because it is one of the few ways to check accuracy against an external, agreed truth rather than just your own internal consistency. The caveat is cost and fit: certified reference materials are expensive and made in limited amounts, and they only test your method honestly if their matrix resembles your real samples. A pure-solution standard cannot reveal problems caused by a complicated sample matrix.

To check an analysis for cadmium in fish, a lab buys a certified reference fish-tissue powder certified at 0.082 ± 0.005 mg/kg cadmium; their own result of 0.080 mg/kg falls inside the certified range, confirming the method is accurate.

Not every reference material is certified: a plain reference material has assigned values but no formal certificate or traceable uncertainty, so only a certified reference material gives the documented, traceable basis needed for accuracy claims.
