Central auditory decoding and attention-steered hearing
A complementary frontier reads the brain instead of writing to the ear. Cortical tracking of the speech envelope — the fact that low-frequency EEG/MEG/ECoG activity phase-locks to the amplitude envelope of attended speech — lets a decoder infer which of several talkers a listener is attending to (auditory attention decoding, AAD). The application is the neuro-steered hearing aid or cognitive-control CI: in a cocktail-party setting, decode the attended stream from the user's own neural signals and preferentially amplify or transmit it, solving the selective-attention problem that current devices cannot.
Progress is real but constrained: AAD works offline and increasingly in real time, but reliable single-trial decoding needs many seconds of data (too slow to track rapid attention switches), scalp EEG is artifact-prone and cosmetically hard, and in-ear (cEEG) or under-skin electrodes trade signal quality against wearability. It also intersects the security and privacy frontier — a device that continuously decodes attention is decoding a form of intent. Whether closed-loop attention-steered amplification produces robust real-world benefit, rather than lab-condition gains, is not yet established.
