Cells live in a world far smaller than anything our eyes evolved to see, so to talk about them we need the right rulers. The two everyday units of the cell world are the micrometer and the nanometer. A micrometer (µm) is one millionth of a meter — a thousand times smaller than a millimeter. A nanometer (nm) is a thousand times smaller still: one billionth of a meter. Cells are measured in micrometers; the molecules and machines inside them are measured in nanometers.
Some anchoring numbers help. A typical bacterium is about 1 to 2 micrometers long. A typical animal cell is roughly 10 to 30 micrometers across — small enough that a few hundred would line up across a single grain of salt. The width of the DNA double helix is about 2 nanometers, and a water molecule is a fraction of a nanometer. The human eye can just resolve objects around 100 micrometers (about the width of a fine hair), so almost all cells are invisible without a microscope; the molecules inside them are far beyond even a light microscope and need electron microscopes.
Thinking in 'orders of magnitude' — steps of ten times bigger or smaller — is the key skill here. Going from a meter down to a cell is about five factors of ten; from a cell down to a molecule is several more. Getting these scales right is not pedantry: it explains why cells are small (the surface-area-to-volume limit), why we needed microscopes to find them at all, and why a virus (tens of nanometers) is far smaller than the bacterium it might infect.
Stack about 50 to 100 typical cells side by side and you span roughly the width of a single human hair — which is why you cannot see one cell, but you can sometimes see a clump of millions of them, like a speck of mold.

Watch the prefixes: a nanometer is a thousand times smaller than a micrometer, not the other way round. Mixing them up changes a measurement by a factor of a thousand.
