Bones are the rigid parts, but a skeleton of bare bones would be a rattling pile of sticks. Three soft connective tissues turn it into a smooth, stable, working machine: cartilage is the slippery cushion at the joint surfaces, ligaments are the straps that tie bone to bone, and tendons are the cables that connect muscle to bone so the muscle's pull actually moves something.

Each does a distinct job. Articular cartilage caps the bone ends inside a joint — a smooth, slightly spongy layer with very few blood vessels, which is why it heals poorly once worn down (the gradual loss of it is osteoarthritis). Ligaments run from bone to bone across a joint, acting like reins that let normal movement happen but check it at the safe limit; over-stretch or tear one and you have a sprain, and the joint feels loose and unstable. Tendons attach muscle to bone and transmit force; they are strong but slow to heal, and an overused tendon becomes painful and degenerated (tendinopathy). All three are built mainly of collagen, the same tough protein, arranged in the direction that best resists the pull each tissue must take.

These tissues are the everyday business of musculoskeletal rehabilitation. They have a poor blood supply compared with muscle, so they heal slowly and on their own schedule — a torn ligament or tendon may need months, and pushing too hard too soon re-injures it, while doing nothing lets it heal weak and stiff. The art is graded loading: enough stress to guide the new collagen to line up strong, not so much that it fails. Knowing which structure is hurt also changes the plan entirely — a sprained ligament, a strained tendon, and worn cartilage all behave differently and recover on different timelines.

Someone rolls their ankle. The diagnosis is a sprained ligament (bone-to-bone strap over-stretched), not a strained tendon (muscle-to-bone cable). The two need different protection and a different timeline, even though both 'hurt the ankle'.

Because cartilage, ligaments, and tendons have a thin blood supply, they heal slowly; 'no pain' does not mean 'fully healed', and returning to full load too early is a frequent cause of re-injury.
