cardiovascular risk score

A cardiovascular risk score is a calculator that blends your risk factors into a single estimate — usually the percent chance of a heart attack or stroke over the next ten years. It works like a weather forecast for your arteries: it cannot say what will happen to you, only how the odds stack up given what is known about you.

Common tools such as SCORE2, the Pooled Cohort Equations or QRISK combine age, sex, smoking status, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, sometimes adding ethnicity, kidney function or family history. They were built from large populations followed over many years, so a 15 percent ten-year risk means roughly 15 of 100 similar people would have an event in that window.

Scores are decision aids, not destiny. They guide who might benefit most from treatments like statins, but they can mis-estimate risk in people unlike the original study populations, and they ignore newer markers such as coronary calcium. Clinicians use them as a starting conversation, then adjust for the individual in front of them.
