A BI tool turns data into charts, tables, and dashboards that non-technical people can explore without writing code. You connect it to a warehouse, define key metrics once (like “active users” or “monthly revenue”), and then anyone in the company can filter, drill down, and answer their own questions through a point-and-click interface.

BI tools matter because they put data in front of decision-makers, closing the gap between “the data exists somewhere” and “the team actually uses it.” The risk is the “dashboard graveyard” — dozens of dashboards nobody trusts because each defines metrics slightly differently. The fix is a shared, governed definition of metrics (often built in dbt) so every chart agrees on what a number means. Popular tools include Tableau, Power BI, Looker, and Metabase.
