A bug bounty program is a standing public offer that pays independent researchers for finding and responsibly reporting vulnerabilities, rather than exploiting them. It harnesses the same skilled people who could attack a protocol by giving them a legitimate, lucrative alternative: report the flaw privately, get paid according to its severity, and let the team fix it before anyone is harmed. For live protocols holding real funds, an ongoing bounty extends scrutiny far beyond what a fixed-window audit can cover, because the whole world is invited to look, continuously.

A serious program is more than a wallet address and a promise. It defines scope (which contracts and which classes of bugs are eligible), a severity matrix with reward tiers, rules of engagement, and a responsible-disclosure process: report through a private channel, give the team a window to patch, and only then disclose publicly. Many programs add a legal safe harbor so good-faith researchers are not prosecuted, and platforms such as Immunefi and HackerOne intermediate submissions, triage, and payment. Top tiers for critical smart-contract bugs commonly run into the hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

The economic logic is what makes a bounty work or fail: the reward must be large enough to beat what an attacker could earn by exploiting the bug on the black market. A 50,000 dollar bounty on a contract securing 500 million dollars does not flip a rational attacker's incentive, which is exactly why the largest programs cap critical payouts in the millions and sometimes offer a percentage of funds at risk. A bounty is a complement to audits and testing, not a substitute, and it only delivers value if the team triages fast and actually pays.
