A bronchial carcinoid is a relatively uncommon, usually slow-growing tumor of the airway that arises from neuroendocrine cells — the same family of hormone-producing cells that, in their malignant fast-growing extreme, give rise to small-cell lung cancer. A carcinoid sits at the gentle end of that spectrum: think of it as a distant, far better-behaved cousin of small-cell cancer.

These tumors often grow inside a bronchus, so they can block an airway and cause a recurring cough, wheeze, coughing blood, or pneumonia that keeps returning in the same spot. Unlike most lung cancers, they are not strongly linked to smoking and tend to occur in younger people. Pathologists separate them into typical carcinoids, which behave well and rarely spread, and atypical carcinoids, which are somewhat more likely to spread.

Because they are usually localized and slow, the main treatment is surgery to remove the tumor, often with an excellent outlook, especially for typical carcinoids. Occasionally a carcinoid releases hormones into the bloodstream, producing flushing, diarrhea, or wheezing — the so-called carcinoid syndrome — though in lung carcinoids this is uncommon and more often seen once the tumor has spread to the liver.

A caveat worth stating: although usually indolent, carcinoids are still genuine tumors that can recur or metastasize, so they need proper staging, treatment, and follow-up rather than being dismissed as harmless.
