In traditional pottery there is a useful halfway house between the fragile raw green body and the fully finished ware: you give the piece one gentle, lower-temperature firing first, just to toughen it up, and only later fire it hot to finish. The bisque body is a ceramic in that in-between state — a green body that has been given a preliminary, relatively low-temperature firing (the bisque, or biscuit, firing) to burn out organics and give it enough strength to handle, but that is deliberately not yet fully fired and densified.

The bisque firing, for traditional whiteware often somewhere around 900 to 1000 degrees C, does two jobs. It drives off the last chemically-held water and burns out any organics for good, and it lets the particles just begin to bond, so the once-fragile green body becomes a firm, porous ceramic that can be picked up, sponged, and dipped without crumbling. But it is fired low on purpose: the bisque body is left porous and absorbent, which is exactly what makes it easy to glaze — dip it in a liquid glaze and the open pores suck the water in, leaving an even coat of glaze powder clinging to the surface, ready for the hotter glaze (or glost) firing that melts the glaze and finishes the body.

Bisquing splits a risky one-shot firing into two safer stages and makes decorating practical. A raw, unfired green body dipped in watery glaze would soften and fall apart; a bisque body is strong enough to survive handling and glazing yet still thirsty enough to grip the glaze. The trade-off is an extra kiln cycle and its energy. Not every ceramic is bisqued — many industrial and advanced ceramics go straight from green to a single high firing — but the bisque state remains a mainstay of studio and tableware pottery precisely because it makes the fragile green stage safe to work with.

A potter pulls porous, pale bisqueware from the first firing: it clinks softly, takes a pencil mark, and drinks up glaze like a dry sponge when dipped. That thirst is the point — the bisque body grips an even glaze layer that a raw green body, dissolving in the same bucket, never could.

The bisque body is a green body given a low first firing: strong enough to handle and glaze, yet left porous on purpose so it drinks up the glaze.

A bisque body is only lightly fired, not finished: it is still porous, not yet vitrified, and would not hold water on its own — the higher glaze firing that follows is what densifies and seals it. Bisquing is a handling-and-glazing convenience, not the final firing.
