a base station
A base station is the antenna-and-radio equipment that serves one cell of a cellular network — the thing your phone is actually talking to when you are out and about. You see them as the tall towers by the highway, the panels bolted to a building, or the small boxes on lamp-posts in a busy downtown. It is the cellular counterpart of a Wi-Fi access point: the fixed point where the air meets the carrier's wired network.
A base station does two jobs. On the radio side it manages all the phones in its cell — assigning them time and frequency slots, adjusting their transmit power, tracking signal quality, and handing a phone off to a neighboring base station as the user moves out of range. On the network side it connects (over fiber or microwave links called backhaul) to the carrier's core, passing user traffic toward the Internet and exchanging control messages about who is connected and where. Each generation has its own name for this device: NodeB in 3G, eNodeB in 4G LTE, gNodeB in 5G — different radios, same essential role.
Why it matters: base stations are the densest, most expensive part of a cellular network to build and run, and their spacing sets coverage and capacity. Cities pack in many small cells (and, in 5G, lots of tiny ones at street level) so the limited airwaves can be reused and shared among huge crowds; rural areas use a few tall towers covering large cells. An honest note: a base station coordinates the air far more tightly than a Wi-Fi access point does — phones do not contend for the channel CSMA-style; the base station schedules who transmits when, which is part of why cellular handles dense, mobile crowds more gracefully than Wi-Fi.
At a packed stadium, the carrier rolls in a portable base station on a truck. Tens of thousands of phones in that one cell are scheduled, slot by slot, by that base station instead of fighting over the air the way Wi-Fi devices would.
The base station schedules the air; phones do not contend freely.
A base station is the radio edge only; it does not by itself authenticate you, bill you, or route to the Internet. Those live in the cellular core behind it, just as a Wi-Fi AP's gateway and addressing live elsewhere in the router box.
