The baroreceptor reflex is the body’s automatic ‘cruise control’ for blood pressure. Stretch sensors in the artery walls constantly report the current pressure to the brain, which then nudges the heart and vessels up or down to keep things steady—all within seconds and without any conscious effort.
The sensors (baroreceptors) sit mainly in the carotid sinus and aortic arch. When pressure rises and stretches them, they fire more, and the brainstem responds by slowing the heart and relaxing blood vessels, easing pressure back down. When pressure falls and stretch decreases, the opposite happens: heart rate and contractility rise and vessels constrict, propping pressure back up. It works through the autonomic nervous system, balancing sympathetic and parasympathetic outflow.
This reflex is what lets you stand up without fainting, by instantly compensating for gravity pulling blood into the legs. It is a rapid, short-term regulator, not a long-term thermostat—over days, the kidneys and hormones do the longer-range pressure setting. The reflex can also blunt with age or disease, contributing to dizziness on standing (orthostatic hypotension).
When you stand up, the baroreflex instantly speeds the heart and tightens vessels to stop blood pressure from dropping too far.

The baroreflex is a fast, second-to-second regulator; long-term blood pressure is set mainly by the kidneys and hormones.
